It is celebrated mainly in Bihar, Jharkhand and the Terai regions of Nepal, and in those areas where people from those areas have an existence. Although it is inimitable to Bihar but it has been observed in some parts of West Bengal, Orissa, Mauritius, Assam mostly among the Maithili and Bhojpuri speaking people.

In Hindu mythology, Sun worship is believed to help cure a variety of diseases, including leprosy, and helps ensure the longevity and prosperity of family members, friends, and elders.
