Brabus SV12 R

Once again Brabus {link} have created a car that takes both power and opulence to the extreme in the highly impressive and equally imposing SV12 R.
Based on the face-lifted Mercedes S600 the Brabus SV12 R produces 750PS and 1350Nm of torque from its refined twin turbo V12 engine. Whilst not a headline grabbing amount of power it is more than enough to power the 6.3 litre (an increase over the standard 5.5 litre) SV12 R to 62mph from a standing start in 4 seconds, top speed is electronically governed to 210mph.
As with every other Brabus that has adorned their IAA stand the SV12 R is absolutely brimming with Brabus modifications, from the huge brake discs (380mm front and 355mm rear) and calipers (12 pot front and 6 pot rear) to Brabus’ own 21“ wheels. Exhaust gases are carried into the environment by a quad pipe sports exhaust sytem
Aluminium front wings, specially designed front bumper, LED rear lights, LED front running lights, side skirts and rear spoiler/diffuser all improve performance as well as adding Brabus style.
Internally the SV12 R is a technophobe’s nightmare with a notebook, TFT Display, Web cam, MP3player and an internet connection all fitted. All these gadgets and the standard Mercedes fare are wrapped in exquisite leather offering cutting edge technology in a refined and extremely comfortable setting.
For those wishing tranquility along with breakneck performance there can be no other choice but the Brabus SV12 R!

Kicherer E Class.

German tuner Kircherer {link} have unveiled their styling and performance package for the new AMG E Class.
Carbon is used widely in the body styling products thus the front spoiler, rear spoiler, rear bumper insert and mirror covers are all light weight carbon. All the styling items are designed to fit an E Class that has the AMG styling packet fitted already (Kircherer are well known and respected AMG specialists).
Kircherer already have a few engine tuning kits available for the new E Class with others under development.
A suspension kit is already on offer as is a performance exhaust sytem.
The interior also attracts Kircherer's attention gaining a sports steering wheel, carbon dash and door inserts as well as extra leather detailing.
Expect more tuning options from Kircherer for the E Class and other Mercedes to follow soon.

The most powerful SUV in world.

This month's Geneva Motorshow saw 2 claims for the world's most powerful SUV. First Brabus {link} unleashed their 700PS twin turbo G V12 S (based on the Mercedes G Class) then Mansory {link} unveiled their 710PS Chopster (based on the Porsche Cayenne.)!! Whilst the Chopster has a higher power figure its turbocharged V8 offers a mere 900Nm of torque compared to the G V12 S and its 1320Nm of torque!
The power and torque of both Über-SUVs endows them with performance that leaves all bar the hottest of hatches realing in their wake, unfortunately they both also come with very high price tags too!

New (old) Porsche Estate.....

A mere 18 years after the original 10 DP Motorsport {link} dp44 cargos were produced the final 5 are entering production. Based on a Porsche 944 with some Volkswagen derived parts added the dp44 Cargo retained the handling of the 944 whilst becoming a reasonably practical estate car, all finished to the excellent quality standards associated with DP (the same company who made the road legal version of Porsche's ubiquitous 956/962 race car).

Suitable for any (roofed) 944 the conversion uses various VW Passat derived parts that result in a very smart, almost manufacturer appearance and (more importantly) a proper 4 seater 944 with boot space too. The latest production models will be fitted with coilover suspension, 993 turbo brakes and 18" wheels as standard thereby improving their road performance over the original production models.

The dp44 is still a great drive, the majority of extra bodywork being high quality glassfibre. The 944 (and follow on 968) was an acclaimed performance coupé and when the dp44 rear conversion is fitted to a 944 S2 its sprigthly performance is still enjoyable nearly 20 years after its orginal conception.

Cost (excluding donor car) for the conversion are around £16,000 but with the production run planned to stop at 5 demand is expected to outstrip supply considerably!

Insignia by Steinmetz

Steinmetz {link} have debuted their tuning package for the new Opel (Vauxhall) Insignia and it looks stunning! Whilst offering nothing revolutionary the Steinmetz package certainly adds more style to the standard car.
By lowering the Insignia and fitting some highly attractive 20" wheels (available in either white or anthracite with polished spokes and rim) Steinmetz have made the Opel (or Vauxhall) look more purposeful and dramatic immediately. Add on the deep front spoiler and large black badgeless grille and the end result is most impressive.
Along the side of the Insignia Steinmetz have opted for subtle but effective styling touches, using pinstripes to great effect.
The rear of the Steimetz Insignia benefits from a new twin pipe (left and right) exhaust back box which offers better sound quality, a little extra performance and a far sportier appearance.
With the insignia being such a new car tuners have had little time to develop a complete package for the car and Steinmetz are exactly the same. Expect them to add new products for the Insignia for many months to come.

Alpina B3.

The BMW M3 is the ultimate performance incarnation of the BMW 3 series but what if you want a slightly less extreme 3 series? The standard 335i isn’t all that impressive and leaves a large performance gap unfilled between it and the M3. That is unless you look at faithful BMW tuner Alpina’s B3. The B3 sits perfectly between the 335i and the M3, offering an ample 360PS (approximately 60 more than the 335i and 60 less than the M3).
Alpina {link} have been tuning 3 Series BMWs for nearly 30 years so the B3 is virtually guaranteed to be a good car. It doesn’t disappoint, the power delivery is smooth and effortless from the 3 litre twin turbo 6 cylinder. Slides can be induced if required but with all the electronic driver aides switched on the B3 remains very easy to drive even in the wet. Handling is crisp and precise, Alpina’s modifications not being overly detrimental to passenger comfort at all.
The
Alpina B3 isn’t an outright performance car, despite sprinting to 62mph a tenth quicker than an M3. The subtle yet effective spoilers don’t draw attention, the refined leather interior is more comfortable than hardcore performance and that really sums the B3 up. It is a very quick 3 series BMW (available as saloon, coupe and cabriolet) that has excellent handling characteristics but that is not as, dare one say, power mad as the M3. It is though a far more interesting and enjoyable car than the standard BMW 335i and is a fine example of Alpina’s expert knowledge.

Audi A5 TDI MTM.

For those who want S5 performance but would rather use diesel fuel Audi tuner MTM {link} are offering their tuned version of the 3 litre V6 TDI A5. Boasting an impressive 300PS and 580Nm at a mere 1300 rpm the MTM A5 is certainly powerful, the BMW 650i has a mere 490Nm of torque in comparison.
All that power and torque transfers safely and easily through the excellent 6 speed gearbox into the well respected Quattro four wheel drive system. As with the S5 oversteer can be provoked when conditions allow and with such a surge of power so low down the MTM A5 is a really enjoyable drive. MTM’s refined suspension and 21” wheel package makes the handling not only razor sharp but exceptionally capable too. There are very few cars that have as much grip as this MTM A5, fewer still that weight about 250kgs under 2 tonne!
The grip, handling and power from the MTM tuned V6 TDI mean that this diesel A5 is actually a quicker car than the S5 on most roads. A twisty B road will see the S5 efficiently outpaced by the MTM TDI, although at the end of the journey the S5 driver will have had a far more comfortable trip, MTM’s wheel and up-rated suspension result in an exceptionally stiff and passenger unfriendly rid

Mercedes C 63 AMG.

Is the C 63 AMG’s (and therefore Mercedes {link}) answer to the BMW M3 and Audi RS4? Yes it is. Does it compare favourably to BMW’s icon and Audi’s massively impressive class leader? Once again the answer has to be yes. Thanks to AMG {link} and their development the basic facts make impressive reading. A 6.2 litre V8 producing 457PS and 600Nm of torque all driving the rear wheels. The Audi and BMW are certainly lagging behind in the power and torque stakes. A little surprisingly the C 63’s chassis handles the power well, having competent handling on virtually all road surfaces. Steering inputs can feel vague when driving at speed but otherwise the Mercedes is more than capable, proving to be extremely enjoyable when the road conditions allow.
The C 63 benefits from updated electronics over the standard C Class; the automatic gearbox has a paddle shift system for those who prefer to control gear changes. The ESP system has a standard as well sport setting, for dramatic powerslides the ESP can be switched off. These features give the opportunity to really test the car’s limits. In reality though most owners will never use the paddles to shift, nor will they ever switch the ESP off.
The Mercedes is slightly more subtly styled than its Bavarian competition, which can be seen as a plus point, although it certainly is no shrinking violet. Internally the Mercedes is a little on the cramped side but this is forgotten when the accelerator is pushed to the floor!
The Mercedes C 63 AMG is an awesomely quick saloon car and does provide a realistic alternative to both the Audi RS4 and BMW M3. It isn’t, however, a better car than either of its German compatriots. It is so close to the M3 and RS4 that it is difficult to say it is noticeably worse than either of its competitors it just doesn’t quite feel as complete a package.
The only major question mark about the C 63 is Mercedes quality, especially as the 2 year warranty isn’t as good as either of it competitors. If there are no quality issues then a Mercedes C 63 AMG will provide enjoyable, dynamic and exhilarating motoring for its owner.
TECH SPEC MERCEDES C 63 AMG:~ 5 seat, 5 door Saloon. 6208cc 8 cylinder water-cooled V8 engine producing 457PS @ 6800rpm. 7 speed automatic gearbox. Rear wheel drive. Top speed 155mph (limited). 0-62mph 4.7 seconds, 0-124mph 15.6 seconds.
